Islamic Period

TAIFA JUG WITH EPIGRAPHIC DECORATION

Ceramic made with cuerda seca parcial technique (‘partial dry string’).

Maximum height preserved: 31 cm.   Maximum diameter: 28.4  cm.

Hispano-Muslim. 11th century.

Origin

Plaza de Belén. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.

Description

Jug with trilobed mouth, decorated in the cuerda seca parcial style. The mouth and shoulder display green glass raindrops. Between double lines on the widest part of the body is the word Yumn or al-yumn (happiness). This was done in green glazing and repeated five times on each side of the jug. The dry string decorative technique applies a preparation of different metal oxides inside lines outlined with fat and pigment, which served as a barrier to prevent the glaze from running. The motifs here are filled with green glazing achieved from copper oxide.
