VALENCIAN BOWL WITH HANDLES

Christian Middle Ages

VALENCIAN BOWL WITH HANDLES

 Blue and gold pottery.

Diameter of mouth: 13.3 cm. Height: 5.1 cm. Base diameter: 5 cm.

Late Medieval Christian. Between 1410 and 1440.

Origin

Calle Manuel María González 4. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.

Description

It has a cobalt blue inscription in Gothic letters with the expression “AVE MARÍA”. The bottom is decorated with a schematic dotted-flower plant motif. These consist of groups of thick dots with a fine surrounding stroke, inscribed in irregular circular spaces formed by thin enveloping carvings and a series of smaller dots. The reverse is decorated with very stylised flowers framed by circles. This bowl was made in one of the many Valencian workshops in Manises, which literally flooded the national markets and half of Europe throughout the Late Middle Ages and the first few decades of the 16th century.
