ITALIAN BOWL FROM LIGURIA

Blue on blue "berettino" pottery.

Maximum diameter: 13 cm. Height: 6 cm. Base diameter: 5.6 cm.

Modern Age. Second half of the 16th century.

Origin

Plaza de Belén. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.

Description

A rural house is depicted on the bottom, framed by a double circle. Decoration known as “decoro a quartieri” begins at this double circle, alternating acanthus leaves with rays of sun. The exterior has a border with criss-crossing strokes called “a cestini”, evoking images of weaving wicker baskets. The blue-on-blue “berettino” glaze was widely used in ceramic manufacturers in Liguria, particularly in Genoa, Albisola and Savona. The arrival of some of these potters in Seville was to bring long-term changes in society's tastes, and an alteration to traditional pottery techniques of Mudéjar origin.
