VISIGOTH CAPITAL AND CYMA

Marble.

Capital: Height: 13 cm. Width: 9 cm. Depth: 9 cm.

Cyma: Length: 28.5 cm. Height: 9.5 cm. Width: 21 cm.

Visigoth period. Late 6th century - 7th century A.D.

Origin

Mesas de Asta. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.

Description

Marble capital and cyma from a mullioned window. The capital has the same decoration on all four faces: illustrated plant motifs. The cyma is a frustum and even more illustratative. It has a simple moulding on its two larger faces and three leaves emerging from a semicircle on the smaller faces. Both pieces are from Mesas de Asta and were found very close together, thus indicating that they could have been decorative features from the same building.
