ALMOHAD CHAMBERPOT WITH EPIGRAPHIC LEGEND

Ceramic made with cuerda seca technique (‘dry string’).

Diameter of mouth: 18 cm. Height: 23.8 cm. Base diameter: 16.5 cm.

Hispano-Muslim. 12th – 13th century.

Plaza de la Encarnación. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.

 

Description

Cylindrical chamber pot, tall and straight walls and flat support base. Decoration made by complete cuerda seca is visible on the exterior surface. It repeats the word al-mulk (power). It is part of a collection of materials recovered during excavations at Plaza de la Encarnación, near the Alcázar in Jerez. It dates back to somewhere between the second half of the 12th century and early 13th century and is one of the most interesting collections of Almohad ceramics discovered in Lower Andalusia.
